Seventh-grader Tom Bender is kind of a loner, having one friend and spending lots of time fantasizing about being a superhero. When a new girl enrolls in his school, he and his classmates don't know how to react. Jessica Feeney has come to New Haven to undergo a series of skin grafts she needs after being severely burned. Tom is somehow able to find the essence of Jessica behind her unsightly appearance.
