Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson
When orphaned sixteen-year-old Hattie learns that her uncle has left her his land in Montana, she leaves her Iowa small town without a worry to settle in the west. On arriving, she learns that “proving the claim” is not so easy. In order to stay on the land she must plant crops, fence the land, and learn to live in the harsh wilderness. Some of her neighbors are friendly and helpful, but others are waiting for her fail. Meanwhile the men are being sent to World War I and a flu epidemic is raging. This novel is based on the true story of the author’s great-grandmother.
